Over the past few years, the issue of bullying in schools has become a national concern. San Antonio nonprofits Family Violence Prevention Services, Inc. and the National Council of Jewish Women recently partnered to address the concern with a city-wide video competition called “Can’t Beat Love.” The purpose of the competition, now in its fourth year, is to raise awareness by asking local high school students to create films about bullying to submit to the competition.
Providence Catholic School’s Video Technology class production, “Can’t Beat Love – Why Bullies Bully,” was one of 75 videos from 17 high schools submitted. Last month, the top six winners, which included Providence, were selected and shown at Santikos Northwest Theatre before an audience of more than 300 and a board of judges.
Providence congratulates Mr. Darrell Martin, Video Technology teacher, and students Alejandra Cardenas, Jacqueline Wyatt, and Gabriella Alvarado for winning the Peer Choice Award and the Honorary Award. Each award included a $100 cash prize.
Providence Principal Alicia Garcia said, “Our students were able to practice the techniques that go behind creating a short film, as well as learn a valuable and meaningful lesson.” Garcia added, “This is in line with our core values and beliefs in which we practice integrity and work for justice. The team created a video that brought attention to the dangers of bullying. This project promoted the development of our student’s leadership potential as well as gave them an opportunity to be active participants in seeking justice and peace.”
