(San Antonio, Texas) –TexasLocalFlorist.com, an online directory connecting consumers to local florists throughout Texas, and its parent organization the Texas State Florists’ Association (TSFA), will host the First Annual ‘Junior Floral Cup Design Championship’ at the 2013 State Fair of Texas® on Saturday, October 19, 2013. Five high school students from four Texas cities will compete for the state championship in two categories, “Surprise Situation” and “Theme Interpreted Design.” The competition will take place from 12:00pm-2:00pm on the stage at the Food & Fiber Pavilion. There is no charge to attend the competition; guests can enter with their State Fair tickets.

The five finalists have completed Level 1 High School Floral Design Certification and qualified based on winning performances at the TSFA Jr. Cup Preliminary Competition in their hometowns. A teacher representative, most of whom are certified Texas Master Florists (TMF), mentors each contestant. The finalists are: Tarsheanna Bauer (junior at Center High School, Center; Teacher Rep: Shana Brittain, TMF), Jennifer Esparza (senior at Skyline High School, Dallas; Teacher Rep: Shawn Coyle, TMF), Junelyn Gamao (senior at James Madison High School, San Antonio; Teacher Rep: Josh Anderson, TMF), Adela Reyes (senior at Center High School; Center; Teacher Rep: Shana Britain, TMF) and Haley Smith (senior at Northwest High School, Justin; Teacher Rep: Kristen Stockard).

“It’s exciting to see the talents of these future florists literally blooming while in high school,” says TSFA President Pam Fuller, AAF TMFA. “The Junior Cup design competition is a natural progression from their Level 1 testing, and provides both motivation and inspiration for students, teachers and professionals at all levels. We hope this annual contest will draw more attention to the art of floral design as a career – after all, nothing can brighten your day more than receiving a beautiful arrangement!”

These floral design experts-in-the-making will compete for first, second and third place prizes — all participants will receive an honorable mention ribbon and bragging rights. First place receives a $300 Texas Floral Endowment Scholarship along with the Junior Cup trophy. Second place receives a $150 scholarship and third receives a $75 scholarship. Each design contest will be judged by three certified TSFA members based on category interpretation, creativity, proportion, harmony and texture, balance, focal emphasis, line, depth, color and mechanics. The student with the highest combined score will take home the Jr. Floral Cup Championship with a scholarship to further her horticultural education.
