SNIPSA MASH Clinic for Pets

152 dogs and cats were spayed/neutered in one day.

Editor's Note: Thank you Laura for sharing this story.  AlamoCityTimes.com would like to recognized the incredible work and contribution to our community by the SNIPSA Team.  Check out the video is a commendable effort.

Did you know? San Antonio euthanizes over 30,000 healthy and adoptable animals every year and thousands more are picked up from city streets by Department of Solid Waste. To assist with the problem, Spay Neuter Inject Protect of San Antonio (SNIPSA) recently launched a MASH style spay/neuter outreach program, the Big Fix, to serve targeted neighborhoods.

What is a MASH clinic? Each MASH style spay/neuter clinic is fully equipped with surgery tables, anesthetic machines, autoclaves, surgery packs, kennels, and the support staff needed to sterilize over 100 dogs and cats in a day.  Often pet owners who struggle with limited financial resources are unable to pay for spaying/neutering their pets. SNIPSA understands these challenges and is taking the veterinary clinic to those with the most need.

Why does this work so well?

The concept behind the Big Fix is being able to accommodate large numbers of female chows, pit bulls, shepherds and many other large breed dogs whose offspring stand very little chance of being adopted at an area shelter. By getting these dogs sterilized, we are directly reducing the numbers of dogs entering high kill shelters. Keep in mind that one female dog and her offspring can produce 66,000 dogs in just seven years. So preventing their birth is key to gaining ground with the City's No-Kill movement.

How can you help? Donations are needed to help SNIPSA further its spay/neuter outreach. Each clinic costs approximately $6000 to spay/neuter, vaccinate, and microchip 125 animals. We need community support, including volunteers to help us continue our mission. We have proven that the Big Fix clinics are a proven success and mass spay/neuter is the single most effective means to save animal lives from euthanasia.

SNIPSA is a grassroots organization and currently the only operation in Bexar County performing MASH style spay/neuter. Please visit our website at http://www.snipsa.org/ to make a tax-deductible donation or send contributions to: SNIPSA 6338 N. New Braunfels #185, San Antonio, TX 78209

Thanks to Shannon Espy and SNIPSA for the story and work they do and Cheryl Bodenhamer for the video.
