Pumpkins fly at UTSA “Monster Mash Pumpkin Smash”

Pumpkins fly tomorrow at UTSA Monster Mash Pumpkin Smash

WHAT: UTSA students will put their homemade catapults to the test tomorrow at the universitys first annual Monster Mash Pumpkin Smash. The event, open to all UTSA students, is sponsored by the College of Engineering Student Council.

THE COOLNESSFACTOR: Gone are the days of old when engineering students dropped eggs off roofs to see if theyd survive. In this fun competition, teams of students design and engineer catapults to see which will launch a pumpkin the farthest.

WHEN: Friday, Nov. 20, 2009

Teams will set up and launch catapults one at a time in 19 minute intervals. The first team is scheduled for 4:01-4:20 p.m. The eighth and final team is scheduled for 6:21-6:40 p.m.

WHERE: UTSA Main Campus on the grassy fields next to Parking Lot 11. Seemap.

WHY: By designing and constructing a catapult, students have a fun way to test their understanding of engineering principles. The catapults can be as easy or complex as the students want to make them. In the end, the friendly competition gives the students a chance to earn bragging rights, at least until next year when the tradition continues.
